129 FOOTNOTE NUMBER ELEVEN تاز تو هستی است بدر نرود تخم شرک از دل تو بر نرود Unless your ego leaves you, The seed of idolatry in your heart will not depart. پائے سعیت بلند تر نرود تا ترا دود دل بسر نرود The steps of your efforts will not move forward Until the smoke of your heart-your arrogance-ceases to exist. یار پیدا شود درال هنگام که تو گردی نہاں زخود به تمام The Beloved will manifest Himself at the time When you distance yourself from your ego. تا نه سوزی زسوز و غم رہی تا نمیری از موت ہم نر ہی Unless you first burn yourself out, you will not deliver yourself from burning passions and grief. Unless you first die, you will not liberate yourself from the clutches of death. چیست آں ہر زہ جان و تن که نسوخت آتش اندر دلے بزن که نسوخت Of what use are the worthless bodies and souls that are not burning [in the pangs of separation]; Hurl into the fire such a heart that suffers not from grief! کلبه جسم خود بگن بر باد چوں نمی گردد از خدا آباد Demolish the hovel of your body If the remembrance of God does not dwell in it. پائے خود را جدا کن از تن خویش چوں نگیرد رہے صداقت پیش Sever your feet from your body, If they tread not the path of truth.
