FOOTNOTE NUMBER ELEVEN چوں بماند زہر طرف ناچار نالد آخر بدر گه دادار When he is completely hopeless, At last he cries in the Presence of God- نعره ها میزند بحضرت پاک و از تضرع جبیں نہد بر خاک Cries before the Holy Threshold of God, And places his forehead on dust [in prostration] with humility. در خود بندد و بگرید زار کاے کشتاینده رو دشوار He closes his door and cries in supplication, 'O Dispenser of difficulties! گنه من به بخش و پرده به پوش تانه دشمن زند شادی جوش Forgive me my sins and cover my shortcomings, Lest the enemy rejoice in abundance. ' چوں چنیں فطرت بشر افتاد زال گونه صفت که کردم یاد For, such is human nature That the three qualities I mentioned are all ingrained within it. حسب فطرت بداد ہم ساماں ز لطف بے پایاں Allah the Wise, too, out of His infinite grace, Grants man the means in accordance with his nature; راه فکر و قیاس و خوض کشاد آن حکیمش از پئے جہد خویش عقلش داد Grants him the intellect to steer his efforts, And opens for him the way of reflection, reasoning, and deliberation. و از پئے کار با ہمیں امداد رحم در قلب یک دگر بنهاد And for mutual support, He creates within their hearts compassion for one another, 147
