104 JESUS IN INDIA Perfect Man and opens the eightfold path of truth, certainty, and peace, so that they may be saved. ' The Buddha also taught that righteousness is that safe treasure which no one can steal. It is such a treasure as accompanies man even after death; it is such a treasure from the capital of which all Knowledge and all Excellence develops. Now look, this is exactly the teaching of the Gospels. And these are found in the ancient Buddhist books which belong to the period which is not much different from the time of Jesus, the Messiah, may peace be on him; in fact it is the very same period. Again, on page 135 of this same book, Buddha is reported to have said that he is so irreproachable that no one can point out a single blot on his character. ¹ This too has a close resemblance to a say- ing of Jesus, the Messiah. In the book Buddhism, on page 45, it is written: The moral teaching of the Buddha has a striking resem- blance with the Christian moral teaching. I agree with this, and I also agree that both teachings tell us: Do not love the world; do not love wealth; do not commit enmity against your enemies; do not commit evil and unholy deeds; pre- vail against evil through virtue; treat others in the manner that you wish to be treated by them. This is such striking resemblance between the teachings of the Gospels and the teaching of the Buddha that it is unnecessary to go into any more detail.
